Creative Display Ideas for Your Collection
If you're anything like me, your collection has outgrown your shelf space about three times over. But running out of room doesn't mean you have to stop collecting—it just means you need to get creative! Here are some of my favorite display ideas that won't break the bank.
Budget-Friendly Options 💸
Floating Shelves
Cost: $15-30 each
Floating shelves are a game-changer! They use vertical wall space instead of floor space, and they look super clean. I recommend:
- IKEA LACK shelves (the collector's go-to)
- Amazon basics floating shelves
- Target room essentials
Pro tip: Install them in groups of 3-5 at varying heights for visual interest!
Spice Racks (Yes, Really!)
Cost: $5-15 each
IKEA's BEKVÄM spice racks are PERFECT for displaying in-box Funko Pops. They're narrow, inexpensive, and you can line them up like a gallery wall. Paint them to match your decor!
Baseball Bat Display Cases
Cost: $20-40
These long, narrow cases from Amazon or Michael's are perfect for single rows of Pops or smaller figures. Dust-free and look professional!
Picture Ledge Shelves
Cost: $15-25
Similar to floating shelves but with a lip to prevent figures from falling. Great if you have curious pets or live in earthquake country!
Mid-Range Investments 💰
The Legendary IKEA Detolf
Cost: ~$70
If you haven't heard of the Detolf, welcome to collecting! This glass cabinet is practically a rite of passage for collectors. It holds a TON, keeps dust out, and looks amazing. Downsides: assembly is annoying and they're heavy.
Upgrades to consider:
- LED light strips ($10-20) - Transforms the display!
- Acrylic risers ($15-30) - Creates tiers for more figures
- Extra shelves ($20-30) - Increases capacity
Billy Bookcases with Glass Doors
Cost: $80-150
More shelving space than a Detolf, customizable with different door options. Great for larger collections.
Cube Storage (Kallax)
Cost: $35-180 depending on size
Versatile and modern. Each cube can be a themed display area. Add fabric bins for hidden storage of duplicates or boxes.
Premium Display Options 💎
Moducase
Cost: $200-500+
The dream display for serious collectors. Modular, stackable, museum-quality cases with built-in LED lighting. Expensive but GORGEOUS.
Custom Built-Ins
Cost: $500-2000+
If you own your home and have a dedicated collection room, built-in shelving with lighting is the ultimate flex. Worth consulting a carpenter for quotes!
Creative Display Themes 🎨
By Series/Franchise
Group all your Marvel together, all your Star Wars together, etc. Creates a cohesive look and makes it easy to find specific pieces.
Diorama Style
Create scenes with your figures! Add:
- 3D-printed backdrops
- Model train accessories for scale buildings
- Printed backgrounds from Etsy
- Miniature furniture and props
Color-Coordinated
Arrange figures by box color or character color scheme. Creates a rainbow effect that looks stunning on social media!
Chronological
Display by release date or in-story chronology. Great for MCU or animated series collections!
Rarity Tiers
Put your grails and expensive pieces at eye level or in cases. Commons can go higher or lower. Showcases your best pieces!
Lighting Tips 💡
Good lighting makes a HUGE difference:
- LED strip lights - Cheap and effective (~$10-20)
- Puck lights - Good for spotlighting specific pieces
- Smart RGB lights - Change colors to match your mood or themes
- Avoid direct sunlight - Fades paint and damages boxes!
Small Space Solutions 🏠
Living in an apartment or have limited space? Try these:
- Over-door organizers - Holds in-box Pops in closets
- Corner shelves - Uses often-wasted space
- Under-bed storage - For rotation pieces or overflow
- Rotating displays - Swap pieces seasonally to keep it fresh
- Wall-mounted cubes - Vertical space is your friend!
Display Don'ts ⚠️
- ❌ Direct sunlight (causes fading)
- ❌ Near heat sources (warps plastic)
- ❌ Overcrowding (figures can fall and damage each other)
- ❌ Unsecured tall displays (earthquake/pet/kid risk)
- ❌ Dusty open shelves without regular cleaning
My Setup 🏠
For what it's worth, here's what I use:
- 2 Detolfs for my favorite pieces (with LED upgrades)
- 1 Billy bookcase for Marvel Legends
- Floating shelves for in-box Pops
- A few baseball bat cases for grails
Total investment over 3 years: about $400. Not bad for displaying 200+ pieces!
